Using Mathterial means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site. They apply to the calculators, the guides, the glossary, and anything else published here.
What Mathterial is
Mathterial is a free set of construction estimating calculators and written guides. There is no account to create, nothing to buy, and no subscription. You do not have to give us anything to get an answer.
Estimates, not professional advice
Every figure here is a planning estimate, not a professional takeoff. Yields, waste factors and code requirements vary by product, supplier and jurisdiction, so confirm quantities against the manufacturer’s data and your local building department before you order.
Nothing here is engineering, architectural, surveying or legal advice, and using a calculator does not create a professional relationship between you and us. Anything structural, anything load bearing, and anything that needs a permit should be checked by somebody qualified to sign it off.
Accuracy
We take the numbers seriously. Coverage rates, yields and conversion factors come from manufacturer documentation and published standards, and the guides cite their sources so you can check them yourself.
We still cannot promise the site is correct. Products change, manufacturers revise their figures, codes are amended, and we make mistakes like anybody else. The site is offered as it is, with no warranty that it is accurate, complete, current, or suitable for a particular job.
If a number here looks wrong, tell us through the contact page. We would rather fix it than defend it.
What we are not liable for
So far as the law allows, Mathterial is not liable for any loss arising out of your use of the site. That includes material ordered short or over, wasted time, delays, and any cost that follows from acting on a figure the site produced.
Checking quantities before you buy is your responsibility. The site cannot see your ground conditions, the product your supplier actually has in stock, or what your local authority requires, and it does not know what you are building.
Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited by law.
Using the site
You may use the calculators and guides freely, for your own projects or for work you are paid to do. The answers a calculator gives you are yours, and you owe us nothing for them.
What you may not do:
- republish the guides, glossary or calculator explanations as your own writing
- scrape the site, or send automated or bulk requests beyond ordinary reading
- copy a calculator, or embed one elsewhere as though it were yours
- interfere with the site, or try to reach parts of it that are not public
Quoting a short passage with a link back is fine, and welcome.
Who owns what
The written content, the calculators, the glossary and the design of this site belong to Mathterial. Product names and trademarks belong to their owners and appear here only to identify the things they name.
The result of a calculation is not ours. Use your own numbers however you like.
Links to other sites
The guides link out to manufacturers, trade associations and public documents such as state transportation manuals, so that a figure can be checked at its source. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for what they say or do. A citation is not an endorsement.
Advertising
The site does not currently carry advertising. We intend to introduce it, and when we do, these terms and the privacy policy will be updated before the ads appear rather than afterwards. Advertisements, once they run, are not our endorsement of what is advertised.
Changes
We may change the calculators, the guides, or the site itself at any time, and may stop offering any part of it. We may also revise these terms, and the date at the foot of this page says when they last changed. Carrying on using the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya, and the courts of Kenya have jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of them or out of your use of the site.
